1. Treatment of fever, colds, and infections
As a "natural aspirin", salicin is used to treat mild fever, cold, infection (influenza), acute and chronic rheumatic discomfort, headache and pain caused by inflammation. Aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid), as a synthetic substitute for salicylic acid, has potentially dangerous side effects on the gastrointestinal tract. As its natural configuration, salicin can be innocuously converted into salicylic acid in the blood and liver through the gastrointestinal system. The conversion process takes several hours, so the results will not be immediately felt by the human body, but the general efficacy will last for several hours.

2. Alleviate arthritis pain and low back pain
Salicin is believed to be the source of the anti inflammatory and pain relieving ability of the bark of Salix chinensis. The analgesic effect of white willow bark is generally slower but lasts longer than that of ordinary aspirin products. An experiment found that a class of herbal compound products containing 100 ng of salicylic glycosides can effectively improve the pain relief ability of patients with arthritis after being taken continuously for two months. Another experiment found that daily intake of 1360 mg of white willow bark extract (containing 240 mg of salicin) for two weeks had better efficacy in treating joint site pain and/or arthritis. Using high doses of white willow bark extract may also help alleviate low back pain. A four week trial found that an extract from the bark of white willow containing 240 mg of salicin can effectively alleviate the worsening of low back pain.
